At the beginning of this year, I photographed one of my favorite people in the world—my best friend.
At the time, it was simply a beautiful portrait session. We laughed, played with different looks, and created photographs that captured her—her personality, her beauty, her confidence, and the woman I've known and loved for years.
I had no idea how much those photographs would come to mean to me.
Just five months after her session, my best friend suffered a brain aneurysm and nearly lost her life.
What followed was something none of us could have prepared for. There were terrifying days, hospital rooms, procedures, uncertainty, and a long road that didn't end when she finally got to go home.
She survived.
And she's still here. Still healing, still working through her recovery, and still fighting to get pieces of normal life back.
I'm not sharing photographs of her most vulnerable moments in the hospital here. That's not the part of her story I want these images to tell.
I want you to see her.
The woman she was when she stepped in front of my camera earlier this year—and the same strong, beautiful woman who is still here today.
I've been a photographer for more than 20 years, and I have photographed countless families, women, couples, seniors, mothers, and milestones. But this year gave the words "take the pictures" an entirely different meaning for me.
We don't take photographs because we expect something bad to happen.
We take them because right now matters.
Your best friend matters. Your children matter. Your parents matter. Your partner matters.
You matter.
You don't need to lose the weight first. You don't need a special occasion. You don't need to wait until life slows down or everything feels perfect.
Sometimes the ordinary chapter you're living right now becomes one of the chapters you treasure most.
When I look at these portraits today, I don't just see a beautiful women's portrait session. I see my best friend. I see a day before any of us knew what was coming. And most importantly, I see someone I'm incredibly grateful is still here.
So this is your reminder from an Arlington, Texas photographer—and from a best friend who learned it firsthand:
Take the pictures. Get in the frame. Document the people you love.
One day, you may realize those photographs were never "just pictures" at all.
